El interés de María José Chica radica en la noción de cómo el tiempo y la rutina son representados a través de la pintura y sus posibilidades formales. Le interesa plasmar los espacios domésticos que habita y cómo los objetos y su uso crean nuevos significados y relaciones. Estos objetos, en su aparente quietud, dan cuenta de una vida, del paso del tiempo y de las formas de apropiación de los espacios.

Como formas de medir el tiempo, Chica explora las rutinas, horarios, formatos y dinámicas institucionales que limitan a los seres humanos a seguir instrucciones y realizar acciones repetidas que se convierten en fórmulas (la vida como ecuación geométrica). Por otro lado, le gusta pintar desde el punto de vista opuesto: el tiempo misterioso, natural y cíclico que escapa a nuestro control, el tipo de tiempo que existe en la vida lo queramos o no. La forma en que crecen las plantas, el ciclo de los días y las noches, el tiempo del universo.

María José Chica's interest lies in the notion of how time and routine are represented through painting and its formal possibilities. She is interested in capturing the domestic spaces she inhabits and how objects and their use create new meanings and relationships. These objects, in their apparent stillness, reflect a life, the passage of time, and the ways in which spaces are appropriated.

As ways of measuring time, Chica explores the routines, schedules, formats, and institutional dynamics that limit human beings to following instructions and performing repeated actions that become formulas (life as a geometric equation). On the other hand, she likes to paint from the opposite perspective: the mysterious, natural, and cyclical time that escapes our control, the kind of time that exists in life whether we like it or not. The way plants grow, the cycle of days and nights, the time of the universe.
